Build Start

Building commences for Tommy’s Sports Hall

On behalf of the Tommy Clucas Memorial Fund, we are pleased to announce that we have reached our funding target for the building of a community sports facility at Peel AFC’s football ground. Our Isle of Man registered charity was created in 2005 by friends and family of Tom, a former player of Peel AFC, after he lost his life whilst competing in the 2004 Manx Grand Prix.

The building project recently received a grant from the Football Foundation of just under £100,000 together with a grant of £45,000 from the Manx Lottery Trust, which have been instrumental in attaining our main goal. Private pledges of £60,000 from The Lord Cockfield Memorial Trust, a further £60,000 from a Peel based charitable trust and £15,000 from a private Peel based donor have been equally important. Further donations from local companies, groups and individuals over the last seven years are too many to mention, but have all contributed significantly to the fundraising effort.

Our fundraising efforts have focussed around community events, in particular the Peelstock music festival which completed its seventh successful year in 2012. We are extremely grateful for the time, effort and enthusiasm of everyone involved in Peelstock who include, but are not limited to, Justin and everyone at Event Lighting Services, the Creek Inn, Horizon Scaffolding, Anglin Buttimore, 3FM, A3 Marquees, Pokerstars, the Waterfall Country Pub, Ian Henderson, the Hogg Motorsport Ambulance, Stu Hampson (Burgerman), Heron & Brearley, Tim Morrison, Chris Horton and ACE Hire. Thanks also go to all of the artists and bands who’ve taken to the stage, Peel Police, the security staff, stewards, stage managers and bar staff volunteers, as well as everyone who has attended, without whom the event would not be possible. Without the monies raised by Peelstock, this project would not be getting underway.

With the money raised of over £370,000, we are going to build a 40m x 25m indoor community sports facility, for multisport use, with a 40mm 3G Astroturf surface. The facility will also include a viewing area, storage room and associated facilities. It is hoped that the Tommy Clucas Community Sports Hall will be used by local sports clubs, recreational youth/community organisations and the general community for sport and recreation purposes.

After a competitive tender process, JCK Limited have been selected as the principal contractor for the project. All sub-contractors appointed by JCK Limited for the project are Isle of Man based companies, with the exception of the Astroturf suppliers who are required to be an approved supplier by the Football Foundation in order to satisfy their grant requirements. JCK Limited made a donation to the Charity for the scheme as part of the tender process.

We have been assisted or advised throughout the design and planning of the facility through to the execution of the contract with JCK Limited by John Gray, Ian Myatt, Richard Trubshaw, Steven Morley Chartered Surveyors, Andy Watts, Sean Kelly and Dalrymple Associates. We are also grateful to Simcocks and Dougherty Quinn for their work on the transfer of a small parcel of land purchased from Peel Golf Club for the project.

JCK Limited took control of the site during December and the building project is scheduled to be completed by April 2013. We are now switching our attention to raising monies for a contingency for the building project and to fit out and equip the facility.

We would like to thank everyone who has contributed so far in making this project possible, and for the overwhelming support shown for Tom over the last 8 years. We hope that our local community will take great benefit from the project for many years to come.
